EDIT: Looking over these again, I'm kinda thinking "Butterfly 01" and "Butterfly And Bee 02" were the same picture. So I'm deleting one of them. Thanks again, everyone, for the kind comments!
I have to admit my ignorance as to what I was able to get on the memory card--the varieties of plant and insect I photographed. The only thing I recognized, really, was a bumblebee who was too blurry and got deleted (and therefore didn't make the blog).
But Janiece, the mailbox is where LOOT comes--when it's not from UPS. The mailbox is where LETTERS come from! The mailbox is a daily source of happiness--as is flower pr0n.
Y'all make me feel like a slacker, because I'm a lousy photographer.

I bought a book on easy day hikes in Olympic National Park. If my allergies ever subside enough that I can walk to the mailbox without sneezing I might try a couple.

Tania, take it from me, the secret to becoming a better photographer is to take a LOT of pictures.
Assume that 98% of them are going to be not so great, 1% will be good, and 1% will be really good.
When my flowers are in bloom I general try and go out every day with my camera. You've seen that this gets me a couple of shots a week that I think are decent.
Then I moved onto cats, soon landscapes, and one day I'll try and photograph people. ;)
Amen on what Michelle said. Part of it is practice, part of it is that even the great photographers will end up with a large percentage of trash.
When I was walking Saturday, I filled up a 1 GB SD card and part of a 2 GB card (RAW format is larger than JPEG or PNG, so I think there were maybe 200 photos altogether). A ton of those were blurry, confusing, badly composed, etc. My personal favorites were some photos of mud that were supposed to also include wasps gathering on the river's edge to collect mud for nests (or drinking, I'm not sure which); instead of attributing it to my mediocrity and inexperience, I think I'll assume they were stealth wasps, incapable of being photographed.
But the thing about digital is that it's cheap and recyclable. Two hundred photos on 35 mm film would be something like $40 of film, I think (Scott Kelby, in the book of his I'm reading, says film used to cost him $.20/shot). The 2 GB SD card cost me $14 from Dell and is reusable until it goes bad.
My wannabe-pro son's new camera is a 12Mp. He saved his lawn mowing money and bought two 8Gb SD cards. He typically takes 1,000 pictures or better in a single day's outing just to come up with a hundred or so 'keeper' pics. Sorting through to come up with that hundred is pretty brutal and time consuming, but it works - and the 3 or 4 of those that are great are *really, really* great.
Jeri: ooooh! What kind of camera did he get? Nikon? Canon? Someone else? Sounds awesome!
One thing Kelby suggests (I know, "Kelby, Kelby, Kelby...,"; when I read someone else's book, I'll start parroting it...), that you might pass along to your son, is to use several smaller cards, especially if he gets a paid gig like a wedding. The reason turns out to be a no-brainer: if you have 8 2GB cards and one gets corrupted, you lose 12.5% of your shots; if you're using 2 8GBs and a card dies, you lose 50%.
Will you be posting some of his pics on Smug Puppies? (If you already did and I missed it, I apologize for being a horrible, stupid man.)
Eric, I know she posted a really nice poppy picture that the one son had shared. I had it up as my background pic until Friday.
I do take lots of pictures, and they mostly suck. My problem is that I don't think to take pictures, even when that is my stated goal. Oh well, I'll get there. In about 20 years...

He takes great shots, and I'm a dumbass who wasn't paying enough attention.

Eric, that's a great point, on the smaller cards. He has 4 x 2Gb cards too, he just fills them really fast with his prolific burst-style picture taking habits. And thanks for looking at his pics. :)
He has his own deviant art gallery but it was not being very hospitable to bulk uploads so I made him upload his Yellowstone pics to mine. LOL
And yes, his Canon XSi is very nice. It definitely is a lot closer to the 40D than the XTi in capability, he's super pleased with it. And when we rented the Canon 70-300 IS telephoto lens for him, he loved it and about never took it off. He's saving up for one of his own now. :)
