Small, round and green
No real blog entry today, because I just got home at around 9:30 and I do have news that's big for me (at least): for the first time in four or five years, I have a car payment again.
Meet the newest addition to the family, born in 2004, with 30,000 miles on her:(The parking lot of my condo.)
(Suddenly, my garage has become ginormous. Was there
some strange rift in the space-time continuum?)
I thought about a hybrid, but they're still to pricey for me and also insufficiently fun--I'm kinda at a point where fun is a very major consideration. Heh. Listen to me, like I bought a fucking SUV and not a totally awesome bug. And she's the first car I've ever owned that was actually my favorite color, too.
Anyway, that's the big deal in my evening. How are you?

Sometimes something as simple as new transportation can make you feel good.
Weird.
Wellsian: yeah, I'm a little scared that when S&R see it when we all meet for the Radiohead show, we'll all end up being witnesses at the biggest domestic violence trial in Charlotte history.... (For those not in on the reference: Wellsian and I have old friends, a couple, who play "punchbug" for blood... a few times, more than biceps have been hurt....)
As much as I like my Corolla and the fact that it's fuel efficient and well built, sometimes I crave something more fun to drive.
Of course then I'd probably get myself in a lot of trouble. But it's fun to dream!
Top down, windows down, second set from Iron Pigs On Fire cranked up--Pink Floyd in Fort Worth, 1977 (second set on the "In The Flesh Tour" was Wish You Were Here played in its entirety)--cruising up I85 at a leisurely 75 mph.
Not to brag, but "fucking awesome" fails to adequately capture the concept.
I'm not sure yet about the fuel efficiency: it takes premium, and is rated at 28 mpg on the highway (which is actually worse than the Saturn when it was in its prime), but after the ride home this afternoon... is there a nice way to say it's hard to care right now without sounding like a total wanker?
Michelle, if you get a chance to drive one of these, you gotta. "Fun" is even more inadequate than "fucking awesome." Not sure what your budget looks like, but FWIW the '04 Bug was only around $15k, well within this State employee's price range. You may find it affordable.
I'm... wow.... I'm in a hellagood mood right now, case you can't tell....
Even if we were looking for another car, it Beetle would be out. With my grandmother living with us, we require four doors, and something relatively high off the ground, and definitely something easy for her to get in and out of.
But ONE DAY! One day I'll be able to get a fun car!
Something that goes REALLY FAST!
Something that I'll be able to enjoy from the passenger seat after I lose my license for speeding. ;)
Have you named her? And have you stocked the glove box with hairbrush, hat, etc so that you can take the top down anytime? We've ridden around in Maggie when it's way too stupidly cold to have the top down - but we do anyway b/c the sun is out.
I drive a Honda Element, because it's a practical car for up here and my needs. But the bug was on my potential vehicle list for years. And you got a stick - w00t!
I looked at the Honda Element, too. They're nice cars.
The fact that it was a stick was a little weird for me--I've always driven a stick, and used to have a massive prejudice against automatic transmissions. But the latest generation of automatics seem reliable enough and efficient enough that I was actually willing to get an automatic. I wasn't looking for a manual, necessarily. But then it turned out that the car that I wanted in every other way just happened to have the kind of transmission I grew up driving. Who am I to say "no" to the universe under the circumstances...?
