He really is an amazing figure in musical history. Inventor of one of the first solid-body electrics, inventor of multitracking, and one of the first guys to use effects (like echo, reverb, etc.) while recording--not that he needed gimmicks, he's a hell of a player to start with.
Would someone else have eventually done those things? Probably--but probably a bunch of guys over a longer span of time, and not one brilliant dude in about two decades of continuous innovation. I.e. you can think of Les Paul as about seven different geniuses in one nondescript body. A helluva guy.
