Layers and layers and layers

I stumbled onto this video of the inventor of multitrack recording (he also invented some kind of musical instrument) and his partner (and wife) showing off on CBS, and had to share it. It's pretty freaking awesome.

Did you see the hour long special on him? My Hot Mom gave it to my Smart Man for Xmas, since he plays guitar, and it was fascinating.

I didn't, but I'll have to see if I can rent it. Do you know the name of it--I can see if CafeDVD has it.

He really is an amazing figure in musical history. Inventor of one of the first solid-body electrics, inventor of multitracking, and one of the first guys to use effects (like echo, reverb, etc.) while recording--not that he needed gimmicks, he's a hell of a player to start with.

Would someone else have eventually done those things? Probably--but probably a bunch of guys over a longer span of time, and not one brilliant dude in about two decades of continuous innovation. I.e. you can think of Les Paul as about seven different geniuses in one nondescript body. A helluva guy.
