One reason I'm not interested in the iPad: a picture

Let's see, left-to-right, past the Ubuntu "Show Desktop" icon: Top Shelf, the trash can (doesn't really count), Firefox, Open Folder, Writer's Café, Five-Or-More (what I'm doing instead of writing, sadly), OpenOffice.org (I should be writing); then, past the gap: Evolution, RhythmBox (playing The Decemberists' The Crane Wife, and finally a utility applet containing time, battery, weather, that kind of thing. Then the logout icon. Not shown: the screenshot applet that captured what you're looking at.

The point being: yeah, multitasking.

This is your first comment from an iPad. I've been using it for six hours now and I promise, multitasking is irrelevant. No hyperbole -- this is a new thing.

Oh, I have no doubt it's a new thing and nifty. But it's not my new thing. I don't necessarily want to knock it, but it just doesn't offer me anything, nothing I can use. And the multitasking is part of that for me. A useful tablet for me would be something I can do lots of stuff at once on.

Doesn't mean it's not a cool device for people who have a use for it.

I've been jokingly poo-pooing it a bit, but I can actually see it as really useful to me once the price comes down. Right now, when I'm out on a scout with the powers-that-be, I can show them location photos on my laptop (if I slip in the internet card and wait for it to connect), or I can show stuff on my phone, (if they want to look at stuff on a tiny screen). The iPad would be much better for that and easier to pass around in a van full of people.

But, I've never been an early adopter. I can wait.

I want one because I can take it on the road and leave my laptop behind, and read books on it too. It will be better for me sometimes not to be able to do so much multitasking because spending so much time on computers doing 15 things at once for years has made me a little ADD, which I never was before, not even a little. I could use the imposed discipline that would come with fewer distractions.
