And we're back...
...sort of. Typing with a hand-and-a-fifth is a bitch, and my energy level waxes and wanes, so I don't know how regular updates will be. I probably won't be posting every day. But we're no longer on hiatus, and posts will be honest-to-goodness new posts as opposed to just things that were queued before the accident and routinely popped out.
Here's how I type: with my left hand and the middle finger of my right, and lot's of pecking and backspacing. My whole right arm moves around to the keys my right takes a break like it's doing right now.
I have a broken bone in my right wrist. It's a little crescent-shaped thing that was basically flipped around the wrong way on the tendons, which apparently weren't completely torn. Dr. Perlik at OrthoCarolina, a pretty nice guy who's been impressive so far, went in and bolted the thing down with a screw and some pins this past Friday.
Here's how my bone was broken: on May 16th, driving with friends to a Borders books after dinner (hey, we're nerds), we were crossing the intersection where Sardis Road crosses Providence and becomes Fairview. Some poor sixteen year-old kid driving a light pickup truck on Providence sees the red light but mixes up the gas and brake; apparently he sees my car and then compounds the error by freezing, so his foot's on the accelerator the whole way, or so we're told. I see this truck on my left; I heard somebody say, "Oh shit--"; I'm told it was me. I'm also told I hit the brakes and turned hard right, something else I don't remember but I'll accept happened (we weren't hit square, for one thing; it makes me sort of awesome, for another). And then there's an airbag in my face and my friend shrieking in the seat behind me. But we all walked away, got out of the car and walked to the side of the road, and the kid in the truck didn't kill his little sister or girlfriend, either, and that's a very good thing indeed.

Everyone was more or less alright. The worst hurt of the folks in the Bug, Sam, spent several days in the hospital before they could put her arm back together, but she's home now. I heard the sixteen-year-old's girlfriend's face was hurt pretty badly, but no head trauma. So we're mostly alright, aside from cuts and bruises and broken limbs.
These are photos my Mom took of the car at the scrapyard (the fat, tousle-headed blind man in several images is your faithful correspondent--sorry to potentially disappoint any trollops who might have expected a leaner, better-groomed, action hero; rest assured, in the movie I shall be played by Samuel Jackson):

Requiescat in pace, little Bug. She did her duty, and took one for the team, but it's still sad to say goodbye to her.
And I, I'm afraid, am tapped (or typed) out.

Nice to see you're back, and that your friend Sam is out of the hospital.
Don't over do - we can be patient. We don't like it, but we can do it. :-)
And I'm also glad to finally catch a glimpse of what you look like. :) I knew you didn't have a beard like Nathan drew you.
2. Why wasn't my pizza delivered.
3. That's one squished bug there.
4. Your description of the driver and the passengers in the p/u truck just prove what a mensch you are.
5. Don't try typing "minimum" until your wrist is all better. Really. Just don't even try. ("fewest" will serve fine 'till you're two-fisted again.)
Poor, poor Bug. But, as Vince says, she did her job. (All cars in my family are girls, hope I'm not presuming). Please send my good wishes to your friend Sam. Glad that her arm is in one piece and that she is home now.
I'm NOT patient. I want more posts. The internet has been very boring the last couple of weeks...
I've missed you.
Poor Bug. You can't ask more of a car than what she gave, and I'm very glad that all concerned will be fixed up, if not as good as new, at least with no permanent injuries.
And the Trollop visit is so on. Remember - chicks are much more attracted to the intangibles such as smarts, kindness, a willingness to help others and being a good friend than such trifles as being "a well-groomed action hero." Because really, who wants an action hero who's better looking (or better groomed) than you are?
Am I right, Trollops?
And I'm with the rest - if I had to choose Liam Neeson v. Eric's brains & humor... well, it'd be a tough choice. LOL Seriously, glad to see the real you, and like many women, I've always preferred teddy bear men anyway. ;)
How's the pain levels? Are you back to work yet?
I am so in!!!!
So glad you are feeling better Eric..and your friend too!
Poor Bug, but she did serve you well...are you going to get another?
It's incredibly awesome that you walked away from that. Obviously some fine German engineering there. (The car, not you ;)
Welcome back and take it slow.
By the way...looks like you're ready to take on the LA freeways.
BTW, would've been nice to see a full face photo, but from what I could see, you bear some resemblance to a gentleman I briefly dated a few years ago. Who also, interestingly enough, is also a lawyer, though for a private law firm. Last I heard he was specializing in trademark law - also an insanely bright and liberal fellow. (Distance and schedules are what did us in.)
So yes! Trollop visit is still on! And I'll bring the Godiva liqueur!
I'm looking for a suitable in-joke for the next car, but haven't come up with anything yet.
Anyhow, any wreck you can walk away from is a good wreck. Lil' bug did her job.
And trollop road trip to NC!!
