This might get interesting....

Prince, as many of you may already know, did a cover of Radiohead's "Creep" at this year's Coachella festival. Naturally, fans who were at the show with their video cameras and cell phones posted the performance to YouTube.

Prince, as you may also know, has a bit of a--let's call it a "bipolar" relationship with the internet and with new media/distribution concepts, alternately giving away music and demanding that things get pulled down.

And you may also also know (phew!) that Radiohead, on the other hand, is very much into alternative distribution, fan media, and the internet, having used the internet to sell/give away their last album, having a tolerant eye towards concert bootleggers as long as the recordings are traded and not sold, etc.

So, with that in mind: apparently Prince issued a DMCA notice to YouTube, demanding that videos of the "Creep" performance be pulled. YouTube pulled them. Now Radiohead is telling YouTube to put them back up, with Thom Yorke saying: "Well, tell him to unblock it. It's our ... song." (Heh--knowing how Yorke is, I wonder what went under those ellipses... I'm guessing one word was redacted.)

The performance right extends to the copyright holder--but Prince isn't the copyright holder. Nor is he the author of the videos--the people who made them are.
