I guess I'll be able to buy a next-gen DVD player now...
Like almost everyone, I've been putting off getting into a next-gen video format partly because I didn't want to invest in a loser. It's been quite likely in the Blu-Ray and HD DVD war that someone was going to get stuck with the Betamax of the future.
Never mind, it looks like we may have a winner: TimeWarner is switching to Blu-Ray.
I'm still not going to be in a major rush: I have a lot invested in old-fashioned DVDs (wait--what?!), and there may be some other twist or turn in media distribution: I'd hate to buy a bunch of Blu-Ray discs the year before holocube or datastik becomes the new de facto standard. But this certainly looks like the death-blow to HD DVD. First it was Sony giving a tacit nod to porn on Blu-Ray, now this. Microsoft can't save you now, HD. So, if I do decide to make an investment... well, the choice is obvious, no?
